报告摘要
Computational simulation provides a powerful means of linking atomic-scale processes to the macroscopic behaviour of planetary materials under extreme conditions. In this talk, I will survey recent work from the Environmental Materials Group at NTU Singapore exploring the structure, transport, and mechanical properties of minerals and alloys relevant to planetary interiors. These include computational structure prediction in the N–H–Si–O system, with implications for gas giant chemistry; modelling of p-block element alloying with iron to probe chalcophile–siderophile transitions at core conditions; and the role of ion mobility in governing mechanical response and acoustic attenuation in deep planetary materials. I will conclude by outlining emerging opportunities provided by machine learning and AI approaches for predicting and interpreting the properties of matter at planetary extremes.
嘉宾简介

Simon Redfern is former Dean of the College of Science and current President’s Chair in Earth Sciences at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Trained as a mineral physicist, his research lies at the intersection of condensed matter physics, materials science, and geoscience, focusing on the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions. Before joining NTU, he was Professor and Head of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge. His recent work combines first-principles and atomistic simulations with experimental studies to probe dynamics, ionic transport, and elasticity in minerals and alloys, linking atomic-scale processes to the macroscopic properties of planetary interiors and extending to functional materials.
